Mika the security dog.
The Philippines is a very security conscious country. There are security guards with bomb sniffing dogs everywhere. You will see them at the mall, work building, streets etc. Even in separate stores, you will find a security guard at every entrance. The dogs were so cute but they are working dogs so you of course can't pet them. Well I did pet one dog when I was there.
At our hotel, there is a security guy with the resident security/bomb dog. Her name is Mika (M ee ka). She was such a good dog. Very smart and cute. She lived at the hotel.. On her off hours, she is in a crate on the 7th floor parking garage. I felt bad when I found that out so I went to see her a few times when I got off of work. She would work 10 am - 10 pm. Most of that time I was sleeping or working but I was able to make her my pet project.
I would say hi to both of them when I would come and go and bring Mika treats and pay attention to her. Her coat was always dingy and was gone on her scruff by her collar. I guess the security guy would bath her when he could but it would have to come out of his pay. So I was able to get some dog shampoo for him to use. I didn't want to give him money since I think he would have used it for other things. He kept alluding to the fact that people would give him $ for taking care of Mika.
The Thursday before I had to come back to the USA, we got off of work and around the desk comes another dog. A black lab.. I was shocked. I asked where Mika went and was told that she is in the ER vet clinic cause she was sick. I didn't know what was wrong. They didn't seem to want to tell me much. So I hoped that they would tell me what they find out. Some of the others that I worked with said that they probably put her down. They didn't want to tell me at first but it makes sense. There are tons of dogs out there. I don't they have them spay or neutered because all female dogs look to have had at least one litter. So it would be cheaper to train a new dog then to fix a sick dog. I shed some tears cause if any one knows me, I love dogs. It is so sad and I hate when any dog needs to be put down.
After talking to the security guy, he confirmed that they were going to put her down on Saturday and he was going to be with her. So I hope that I helped make her last few days more pleasant. She was clean and probably felt better.
She was a good dog and I will remember her.
